Choice of mobile phone carrier in a social network

The network graph sums up the basic idea behind my research quite nicely. It shows a class of students at Nottingham University Business School. Students are connected by arrows if they communicate with each other and a clustering according to nationalities (shapes) and mobile phone operators used (colours) is very obvious. Chinese students, for example, mainly interact with each other and friends tend to choose the same operator, as calls between two subscribers to the same network are cheaper – see for example the cluster of red (Vodafone), black (O2) and blue (T-Mobile) nodes.
